The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is one of Nepal’s most scenic and spiritual trekking routes. Located north of Kathmandu, it combines the beauty of the Langtang Valley with the sacred Gosaikunda Lake, creating a journey rich in culture, nature, and adventure. This trek offers stunning mountain views, Tamang heritage, rhododendron forests, and serene alpine lakes.
Less crowded than Everest or Annapurna regions, Langtang Gosaikunda is perfect for trekkers looking for a peaceful Himalayan experience. The journey takes you through Langtang National Park, home to rare wildlife, bamboo groves, and glacier-fed rivers.
Langtang Valley is also called the “Valley of Glaciers.” The region is filled with Tamang villages, yak pastures, and snowy peaks. The valley is narrow but rich in biodiversity and local culture. Langtang village, which was rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake, welcomes trekkers with warm hospitality.
Kyanjin Gompa is a beautiful Buddhist monastery located at 3,870 meters. It’s the perfect place to acclimatize and enjoy side hikes. Trekkers often climb Tserko Ri (4,984 m) or Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) for panoramic views.
Gosaikunda is a sacred alpine lake nestled at 4,380 meters. It is a pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. Every August, thousands of pilgrims visit during the Janai Purnima festival. The lake, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva.
This trek takes you through traditional villages like Langtang, Thulo Syabru, and Chandanbari (Sing Gompa). Along the way, you can witness the unique lifestyle, architecture, and rich customs of the Tamang and Sherpa communities. Moreover, the presence of a local cheese factory in both Kyanjin and Sing Gompa adds a delightful touch to the journey. As you move from one village to another, the changing culture and scenic beauty continue to captivate every traveler.
As you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, our team member will greet you with a traditional greeting and then transfer you to your hotel for the day. You can spend the rest of the day exploring the vibrant streets of Thamel. You’ll meet your guide and other team members in the evening for a comprehensive trek briefing. The day ends with a welcome dinner featuring authentic Nepalese cuisine.
The day starts early as you catch a scenic drive along the northern highway to reach Syabrubensi. Syabrubensi is a small town that settles inside the Langtang National Park and is the doorway to your Langtang trek. The scenic drive, which takes about 7-8 hours, gives you insights into the local village lifestyles. Making multiple stops along the way, you’ll reach Syabrubensi and rest for the day.
The trek officially starts as you start to walk with the Langtang Khola. You’ll cross many suspension bridges through small villages like Pahiro and Bamboo. Pass through dense oak, maple, and rhododendron forests as you witness the Langtang region’s flora and fauna. With gradual ascent, you’ll reach Lama Hotel, a cozy settlement surrounded by lush forests.
Today’s trail moves from lush forest to barren lands with no trees. You’ll get the first glimpse of Langtang Lirung as you progress through the trail. As you gain altitude, you’ll see yaks grazing all over the valley. You’ll pass through old Langtang Village, destroyed by the 2015 earthquake. The new Langtang Village is built just across the old settlement. Langtang Village is relatively developed, with good electricity, accommodation, and network services.
Langtang to Kyanjin Gompa is a short hike that only takes about 3 hours. With a shorter trail today, you can take it slow and explore it more. You can also do a side quest to a Lake just before reaching Kynajin Gompa. Visit the famous yak cheese factory and try some delicious cheese made straight in the Himalayas. The trail opens as you get greeted by a mesmerizing view of the surrounding peaks. In the evening, you can roam around the Kyanjin Gompa and rest.
Tserko Ri is a challenging ascent that takes about 5 hours to summit. You’ll begin before dawn to avoid strong afternoon winds. The steep trail offers magnificent views of the whole region. The summit is one of the most beautiful parts, from where you’ll witness a panoramic view of Langtang Lirung, Langtang II, and the Ganchenpo range. While the summit tests you to your limits, you’ll need to cross your limits before witnessing the glorious view of the Himalayas. After you return to Kaynjin Gompa’s, you’ll soak in the experience and rest for the day.
Today, you’ll descend back to Lama Hotel through Langtang Valley. As you walk the same trail, you’ll see the landscapes from a new perspective. The downhill trek is relatively easy, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. Reach Lama Hotel and rest for the night.
Today, you’ll leave behind the Langtang Valley trail and climb through dense forests to witness rare wildlife. The area you pass through is primarily known for red pandas; though they’re shy and rarely seen, the chances of encountering one are high. Today’s trail is one of the best as you witness magnificent views of the Langtang range to the north and Ganesh Himal to the west. Reach Thulo Syabru for a mesmerizing sunset view.
The trail takes you through dense oak, hemlock, and rhododendron forests. Especially during spring, the rhododendrons paint the hills in spectacular shades of red, pink, and white flowers. You’ll hike to Sing Gompa, also known as Chandanbari, famous for its cheese factory and ancient Buddhist monastery. You’ll reach just in time for the evening prayer at the monastery, providing a peaceful end to the day.
The day begins early as you go to the sacred Gosaikunda Lakes. The trail offers views of Langtang Lirung and the Ganesh Himal, which are always visible from the Kathmandu Valley. The lake presents a serene atmosphere and takes back some of the peace and serenity you’ll end the day.
Beginning the day early, you’ll face the challenging Lauribina Pass in the morning. This ascent provides magnificent views of the Langtang and Ganesh ranges. Prayer flags decorate the pass, where trekkers stop to capture photos and celebrate. From there, you’ll descend to Gopte and spend the night.
The trail takes you to the Helambu region and into the Melamchi Gaun, which settles on the northeast side of the Kathmandu valley. You’ll descend through forests and traditional settlements to reach Melamchi Gaun. The distinct Tamang community of the Melamchi Gaun presents a unique encounter with friendly locals.
Trek through the heart of the Helambu region and witness the famous apple orchards and potato fields. Reach Tarkeghyang to experience the traditional Hyolmo architecture. You can explore the ancient monastery in the evening and interact with locals.
After a hearty breakfast, drive back to Kathmandu. The drive offers final views of the hills and rural Nepal. In the evening, you can roam around the streets of Thamel to shop for souvenirs and celebrate your win. In the evening, meet with the team for dinner, which concludes this incredible journey.
The day has finally come when this magnificent journey comes to an end. With a hearty breakfast, our team will drop you at the airport. Always Himalayas wishes you all the best in your upcoming journey.
